Media Type – Music Video

Dark Sky Roads is an Indie Rock band based in San Marcos

Role – Videographer and Editor

The band wanted a fun and energetic music video to match their song. We took inspiration from Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like, Twenty-One Pilots’ Shy Away, and The Gardens’ Egg music videos.

From planning to release, it took 10 months. In February, we began to concept and find dates and locations to film. Once it got closer to filming, we storyboarded using the demo version of the song. We shot over the course of three days in July (not the smartest decision as it was 100 degrees) with two daytime shoots and one at night. Since the night shoot was in the middle of nowhere, the only big lighting available was the car headlights, which ended up dying, so we had to jump and alternate lighting between the two cars.

In the edit, something I found difficult was syncing the music in time with when they were playing. This took days of aligning and communicating with the band to make sure everything was manually synced correctly since the demo was different than the final. However, I think I did a pretty good job for my first time! I also really enjoyed playing with the different shoot locations in the edit to build as the song built and used the night shoot to fit the Dreams Turn Black theme.

For the animations, I used my roommate’s iPad to draw on Procreate and imported them into Premiere since I didn’t know how to animate using After Effects.
